Different Genres In Electronic Dance Music

One of the cool things about EDM is that there seems to be a genre that almost anyone will find enjoyable. There are so many different styles that all have their own unique characteristics. Many have their own preferences on which one they prefer and also what they dislike. The genres can vary so much. You can find a genre that is really slow and relaxing or one that is fast and aggressive. A person could spend a lifetime analyzing every genre that is under the EDM umbrella. With this blog post, the focus will just be on the different styles of house and bass music.

The house music genre is probably one of the oldest and most original forms of EDM. Since it has been around, a lot of other genres have taken influences and created their own versions of this classic genre. It is usually produced around a smooth one hundred and twenty beats per minute and will sometimes also contain catchy vocals. House music is popular in the scene for it's constant and driving beat. The genre was greatly influenced by the disco era of music and a lot of popular tracks will sample vocals from classic disco tracks. It is one of the most popular genres in the EDM world and has become a staple in the culture. Without house, EDM would not be where it is today.

Bass music is the total opposite of house. This term usually refers to genres like drum and bass, trap, and dubstep. These genres have not been around as long as house music, but they also have special place under the umbrella as well. Drum and bass can be considered the first genre that can be considered bass music. It originated in the United Kingdom and is still widely listened to in that area. These genres can be really aggressive and fast paced. If you were to compare EDM to rock music, the bass music genre would be metal.

These are only two genres within the culture, but there are so many more. With there being so many different styles, categorizing them can be difficult. There is usually debates over what genre a particular song belongs in. Generally people will find common characteristics in tracks and then classify them that way. Most of the time this is by the opinion and the producer may not even agree with their choice. With so many genres though, almost anyone can find one they love.
