The Difference Between DJs and Producers

When one goes to an EDM festival, most of the people that are booked are not considered DJs. They DJ on stage at the event, but that is because it is the only way for them to perform the music that they created inside the studio. A lot of people don't know that there is a difference between the two. Both take a lot of skill and time to master. The very best artist in EDM are experts at both.

A producer is a person who creates original tracks. A lot of what they do is using computer programs to design sounds that they then put together to create a song. This is one of the hardest things to do in electronic dance music. Majority of producers do not start as DJs. They start just by having an interest in music and the desire to create their own tracks. Most spend years trying to perfect their sound and don't even start the process of learning to DJ until their work gets them booked for shows. Sometimes it is very obvious that the artist are not very good DJs, but the ability to create an original tune is respected in the community.

A DJ is generally someone who will mix tracks made by producers. This is totally different than creating an original song, but is still unique in its own right. When a DJ performs, he can mash two tracks together that will make them sound totally different than if they were just being played by themselves. A lot of DJs will start producing their own original tunes, but this is not always the case. To become a good DJs takes years and the skill to use the equipment takes time to learn.

As stated earlier, the very best artist in this scene are experts at both. It is something that anyone that wants to take this hobby into a career must accomplish. Because both take years to master, dedication is key. A lot of hard work must go into both of these skills. Just to be good at one is not enough to become famous. If a DJ does not produce his own original tunes, it is highly unlikely that he will ever get booked outside of his own city. One must find the way to balance their time so that they can master both skills. This probably hardest part of being an EDM artist.
